Novels are forged in passion, demand fidelity and commitment, often drive you to boredom or rage, sleep with you at night. They are the long haul. They are marriage. Stories, on the other hand, you can lose yourself in for a few weeks and then wrap up, or grow tired of and abandon and (maybe) return to later. They can cuddle you sweetly, or make you get on your knees and beg.

alex and rose
my writing
I have finally found the inspiration pictures for my characters Rose and Alex (tentative name). I really need to find a new name for Alex that’s still strong and slightly masculine.

Both of these characters were inspired by these people’s looks. Not by the characters or actresses themselves.

If anyone is curious, it’s about a very dysfunctional couple. Very, very dysfunctional. Their dysfunctional is what I channel my negative energy into, so I don’t go crazy.

Alex was inspired by Kaya Scodelario.

And Rose was inspired by Sarah Chalke. Granted, Rose is only 22, so the look is a little off, but still very close to what I wanted. I’ve also been looking at Caroline Forbes for styling.

And since this story is so depressing and messed up, I have a whole collection of depressing images that I use for inspiration. Some of the best ones include the following images, with the best one being the last one for each character.

For Alex:

Rose:

I think I have 1234567897654321 more pictures pertaining to Rose than Alex. Rose is easy. Her insanity and depression is so pure and logical. I understand her mind and her pain because her backstory has been in my head for years, waiting for me to write it down. But Alex? She was created as a companion for Rose, and aside from her name, I know relatively little about her. She’s so frustrating because she won’t tell me anything about her. I think that’s part of the beauty of her character, though. It suits her. That stubbornness.

Is this what other authors go through? AUGH WHY CAN I NOT UNDERSTAND MY OWN CHARACTERS?!

But yeah, I still need a new name for Alex.

What if she’s dead and she’s talking to Rose (my Rose) about everything that happened. What if they’re both dead, and meeting and going off somewhere, at the end.

Literally everything I have ever written somehow incorporates the post-death syndrome. That is my theme of choice, apparently.

Out of all of my stories/short stories, only one is finished story-line wise.

I should probably write that one to motivate myself more. Of course, it’s based on a dream I had, like 90% of my stories.

I love my two main characters, though. Their names are Fibel and Dizell. Dizell has antlers and a white fun coat. Fibel has tri-colored rings in his eyes, and he moves like the ocean.

Love them.

I need to start writing my story about Lex and Rose. Writing is so calming, and I know that this story will help address some issues.

Writers write because they cannot allow the characters that inhabit them to suffocate them. These characters want to get out, to breathe fresh air and partake of the wine of friendship; were they to remain locked in, they would forcibly break down the walls. It is they who force the writer to tell their stories.

Getting back into the mind of my character after not having written for a week or so is extremely difficult. Sawyer. Just shut up and let me back in. Bare your soul to me, boy.

death
Every writer has one thing that they find to be the most absolutely fascinating topic to write on. For me, it’s the conscience moment right after you acknowledge your death is upon you. Like when Anne Boleyn knelt down before her execution, or when Harry Potter walked up to Voldemort, knowing he would die. I could write a hundred stories on that moment, and still have more to write. That’s my passion.

quote
The writer is both a sadist and a masochist. We create people we love, and then we torture them. The more we love them, and the more cleverly we torture them along the lines of their greatest vulnerability and fear, the better the story. Sometimes we try to protect them from getting booboos that are too big. Don’t. This is your protagonist, not your kid.

My two resolutions for the coming year. I don’t think they’re too absurd.

1. To fall in love. I want to try and go on dates, and find someone that I can feel comfortable with, so that if I fall in love, I’ll fight that much more to keep it.
2. To write a book. I have so many stories that I want to work on, and some of which are even finished, just yet to be written down. I’d like to get working on Genesis, and my SFS story (SFS is just a working title!) at the very least.

So not too much to want, right? It’s what I’m going to work for. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE ELSE! May the odds be ever in your favor.
